The Winnipeg Millennium Library Project consisted of the construction of a full 4th floor addition (approx. 50,000 SF) over top of the existing and newly renovated 5 levels (3 floors above grade and 2-level below grade parkade) library facility.  The project had many challenges including

  • The decanting/displacing/relocation of staff throughout the building and parkade levels without  disrupting the operations of the Winnipeg Library,
  • Dealing with the intricate details of upgrading the building envelope of the building,
  • The complex management of material handling and access to the building site.

The project also included the construction of a full height cast-in-place concrete feature “reading terrace” which was enclosed with a “high performance” glazed curtain wall system projecting out to the southwest elevation, which overlooks a landscaped plaza.

The project examined alternatives relative to construction and design related issues to help achieve goals under sustainable design initiatives such as LEED, CBIP, Power Smart and GMEF. The project was completed on time, within budget and won several national awards.
